Philly's newest energy efficient apartments being built right now

This residential apartment building will offer 25 families in Philadelphia extreme energy efficiency through its goals of Passive House standards and net-zero energy. The building’s facade will include LED lamps to communicate the structure’s current energy consumption to tenants and the public.

Capital 2 will be part of the Delaware Valley Green Building Council's Multi Family Passive House Tour on Thursday, May 4, 2017, at 3:30pm. The tour is part of the DVGBC's 2017 Sustainability Symposium in Philadelphia.

Built to one of the world’s most exacting energy performance standards

Three stories, forty-nine apartments, 52,781 square feet built to one of the world’s most exacting energy performance standards. Whitehall meets (and exceeds) Passive House standards, which will result in extremely low energy bills for the occupants, U.S. war veterans.

The complex, about 30 miles northwest of Philadelphia, will also meet one of the world’s most exacting energy performance standards, called Passive House, which will result in extremely low energy bills for the occupants when it opens in March 2017.

Blower door test? It’s a breeze

Our guys  recently helped the owners conduct a blower door test after our panels were installed. An initial test showed an ACH50 of 0.55, well below the Passive House maximum of 0.6 ACH50 but above the target of 0.45 ACH50 for the structure in its shell phase.

At this point on typical projects, a lengthy leak investigation process would begin. Build SMART's Rob Leonard has been on jobs where this portion can last up to 2 days.

Not on this house. The total time to get the test results below the target of 0.45 ACH50 took less than 1 hour. The culprit? A window had been left partially open.

“I feel for the owners and builders that aren’t aware of Build SMART and are still spending countless frustrating hours leak-chasing and likely losing sleep,” Leonard said.
